On a chilly winter night in Vancouver, I found myself walking along Hastings Street in the Downtown Eastside. This area, often filled with the hustle and bustle of the city, is also known for the random soup tables that pop up, offering warmth and comfort to those in need. As I strolled past 43 West Hastings, just beneath the iconic Save On Meats sign, a friendly voice asked, “Are you hungry?”

I was immediately drawn to the open doors, with light and sound spilling out. “Of course I’m hungry,” I thought, though my empty pockets reminded me of my situation. I hesitated, but the man’s warm smile and welcoming words—”It’s free”—changed my mind. I now know that this kind soul was Ash, a regular volunteer at Plenty of Plates.

Stepping inside, I was greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere filled with light, music, and lively conversation. The magic of the evening was palpable, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. But I knew I was in the right place.

A Three-Course Meal That Nourished More Than Just My Body

The three-course meal I enjoyed that night was more than just food; it was a slice of home. Each dish was crafted with care, offering a taste of comfort that I hadn’t experienced in a long time. While I initially came to satisfy my hunger, I quickly realized that I craved more than just a meal—I craved connection.

As I settled at the long bar with a root beer in hand, I engaged in conversations with several people, but Adriana and Ash stood out the most. Their passion for the community and dedication to A Better Life Foundation were evident in every word they spoke.

The energy in the room was contagious. The hum of conversation, the sound of laughter, and the clinking of dishes created an atmosphere that felt magical. When it was time to leave, I did so with a full heart, a huge grin on my face, and a renewed sense of hope. The warmth of a good meal and the presence of good people had done more for me than I could have imagined.

A New Beginning: From Guest to Employee

Since that unforgettable evening, I’ve become a part of the A Better Life Foundation community. I’ve signed up as a volunteer and have now been onboarded as a paid employee. Today, I stand at the front door as a greeter, extending the same hospitality that first brought me in.

Thank You for Your Generosity

To everyone contributing to A Better Life Foundation, none of this would be possible without your generosity. You provide nourishment for the mind, body, and spirit. To the facilitators, volunteers, and leaders, your strength and kindness are what keep this community thriving. Thank you for bringing back my smile and providing a slice of home to so many in need.
